DI Daniel Harcourt and DS Lucy Redgrave are loaned to Devon and Cornwall Police when a young travel vlogger, Jack Haynes, vanishes on Bodmin Moor while filming at a forgotten tin mine. The local force wants outsiders who won't mistake folklore for noise.
Journalist Charlie Fitz-Gerald arrives on his own account, and the case runs on two tracks: the detectives working it by the book, Charlie working the village of Blisland from the inside.
The official search grid missed the ground where Jack really went. A witness remembers him saying he was meeting someone. And a local geologist reveals that, in his last calls, he had become fixated on old rumours of ritual gatherings at the mine.
Both threads circle a tight group of villagers: the parish council chair with a history of planning interests near the mine, the postmistress who took in a mysterious parcel for Jack and won't discuss it, the landowner seen in an explosive row with him weeks before he vanished, and the vicar, an expert in the moor's folklore.
