In the Abbeys Shadow
The Lanternlight Cases, book 2
A historian is found floating in the Great Bath at dawn, and the mud on his shoes leads to a contested parcel of Abbey land.
Somerset
Hot springs the Romans built a temple round, an abbey with angels climbing its walls, and a body in the Great Bath at dawn.
The Romans built their baths here in the first century AD round the only hot springs in Britain, and dedicated the temple to Sulis Minerva, a goddess part British and part Roman. The water still rises at around 46 degrees and still steams in the Great Bath.
Bath Abbey was begun in 1499 on the site of far older churches. Its west front carries ladders of stone angels climbing to heaven, said to come from a dream of its founder, Bishop Oliver King.
The whole city is a World Heritage Site, which means every development is argued over, and land near the centre is worth a great deal to the right people.
In In the Abbey's Shadow, DI Eleanor Brand is seconded from Wells when the Abbey's historian is found floating in the Great Bath, and the mud on his shoes leads to a field marked for a multi-million-pound development.
