The Arcane Pen and Key

Cornwall

Crime fiction set on Bodmin Moor

Granite tors, abandoned mines and the lake where Excalibur went back to the water: the wildest country in Cornwall.

The real Bodmin Moor

Bodmin Moor is a high granite upland in the middle of Cornwall. Its summit, Brown Willy, is the highest point in the county, and the weather can close in across it in minutes.

Legend says Dozmary Pool, a lonely lake on the moor, is where Sir Bedivere returned Excalibur to the Lady of the Lake. Nearby stands Jamaica Inn, the smugglers' inn Daphne du Maurier made famous.

The moor is scattered with Bronze Age stone circles such as the Hurlers, and with the engine houses of the tin and copper mines that once employed thousands. Many shafts were never properly mapped.

In the books

In The Secrets of Bodmin Moor, the Heritage Crime team are loaned to Devon and Cornwall Police when a travel vlogger vanishes while filming an abandoned tin mine near Blisland, and the local force wants detectives who won't mistake folklore for noise.
