The Meridian Files
The Meridian Files, book 1
An accountant dies in a perfectly ordered study, and DI Clare Cassidy isn't buying the symmetry.
East Anglia
Land taken from the sea and the marsh, flat to every horizon, and kept dry only by engineering and money.
The Fens were wetland until the seventeenth century, when the Dutch engineer Cornelius Vermuyden cut great straight channels such as the Old Bedford River in the 1630s to drain them for farming.
Drained peat shrinks. At Holme Fen an iron post was driven into the ground with its top level with the surface in the 1850s; around four metres of it now stands above the field, a measure of how far the land has sunk.
Everything here depends on pumps, drains, sluices and the people who pay for them: an infrastructure most people never think about until it fails.
In The Meridian Files, an accountant is found dead in a perfectly ordered study, and DI Clare Cassidy and DS Ray Okoro follow the numbers into a conspiracy hidden in the region's infrastructure.
