The Arcane Pen and Key

Wiltshire

Crime fiction set in Salisbury

Britain's tallest spire, one of the four original copies of Magna Carta, and a cathedral close that has kept its own counsel for eight hundred years.

The real Salisbury

Salisbury Cathedral was built in a single campaign in the thirteenth century, which is why it looks all of a piece. Its spire, added in the following century, is the tallest in Britain, and the weight of it has worried builders ever since.

The cathedral keeps one of the four surviving original copies of the Magna Carta of 1215.

Around it lies the Cathedral Close, the largest in Britain: a walled precinct of lawns and old houses whose gates were once locked every night. It is a world within a city, and very good at keeping its business to itself.

In the books

In Blood in the Mortar, a structural surveyor dies in a parish crypt while measuring a wall, a vicar bleeds to death on his chancel steps weeks later, and Brand has to read the silence of a six-hundred-year-old institution.
