The Secrets of Pendle Hill
The Heritage Crime Files, book 3
The team heads to Lancashire, where the shadow of the 1612 witch trials still falls across the hill.
Lancashire
A long dark hill in Lancashire, and the most famous witch trial in English history.
In 1612 a group of men and women from the villages around Pendle Hill were tried for witchcraft, most of them at Lancaster. Ten of the accused were hanged. Much of the case rested on the evidence of a nine-year-old girl, Jennet Device, against her own family.
Four centuries later the trials still shape the area: in its walks, its tourism and the stories its villages tell about themselves.
In The Secrets of Pendle Hill, Harcourt, Redgrave and Fitz-Gerald head north to Lancashire. The book is being written now; readers on the list hear first when it is published.
